Standard Operating Procedures

The News Director is responsible for managing a news team. The News Director and his/her news team must gather, uncover and write news stories for a daily news broadcast. The News Director and the news team should strive to establish and maintain communication with the news contacts on campus and in the community.

Duties:

● Establish a news format

● Write and produce newscasts/headlines for WCVF and WDVL

● Work in conjunction with the journalism department and organize various scripts and programs

● Cover conferences and other live news events

● Keep in touch with news contacts on campus and in the community

● Establish and maintain an emergency contact list

● Acquire press passes for news staff and those board positions that might need them

● Manage a news team

● Make appointments to their respective operations positions

Community Service Director

As Community Service Director, you are responsible for all grapevines, live PSAs and recorded PSAs that go over the air. The Community Service Director should act as a bridge between radio station and the community.

Duties:

● Go through PSAs/grapevines and weed out the outdated ones. See what can be done to update or reuse them.

● Go through the cabinet in the News office and locate all the prerecorded PSAs that are sent to the station.

● Send out letters to all Student Association groups and non-profit organizations explaining who you are and how they can use the grapevine file.

Sports Director

The Sports Director is responsible for the writing and production of daily sports casts. In addition, the sports director works closely with the Sports Information Director in Dods Hall. It is vital that the sports director make contact with the Sports Info Director early and often. This contact will ensure that the station will be set to broadcast live sports events and interview coaching and player personnel. Other sports programming is at the discretion of the Sports Director

Duties

● Design a general format/script that presents the sports in an interesting manner and gives exactly what the audience wants to hear.

● Introduce yourself to the FSU Athletic Director, coaches of the different teams and sports, and possibly even area high schools.

● Find out what equipment is needed to run broadcasts from Dods, Steel, or other remote locations. Ask the other board or previous board members about this.

● Create a plan with the News Director about what they would like to see done and how events and broadcasts will be covered.

● Set up a file system for sports staff to keep their scripts for future reference.

● Keep a running schedule of upcoming activities, complete with who is assigned to them. Give copies to all those needing them, like the staff included as well as general manager and engineer, and program directors.

● Create or find a current sports theme in the station that can be used for sports casts. It should be at least 3 minutes in length.
